Pigeons can be divided into the following types:
1- Meat-producing pigeons:
This type of pigeon is raised to produce young pigeons, and is raised for the purpose of marketing and benefiting from the economic return, and this type of pigeon descends from all its strains from the origin of wild pigeons, including:
* European dynasties:
1- The red carno:
Origin: Northern France. It is the result of crossing the red mondaine with the wild pigeon. Zaghalil has a strong body and weighs about 300 gm per person.
2- Cashew:
Origin: Normandy - France, there are many types of it, and there is a light-colored spot on the chest, and the weight of one individual is 400-500 g
3- Lynx:
This species is distinguished by its simple shape and large size, as well as the density of the upper feathers, and the weight of one feather is 400 g.
4- Almondine:
Its members differ greatly among themselves and may be used in crossbreeding for the purpose of improving eggs, and the weight of chicks is 500-600 g.
5- Strasser:
Origin: Belgium. A strain with good structural composition and white feathers. The average weight of one gull is 350g.
* American Breeds:
1- White Carno:
Origin: America. It is a result of crossing the red carno with different white strains. It was produced in 1915. Zaghloul weighed 400g.
2- The Homer pigeons:
Origin: America. It is characterized by being smaller in size than the white king, and the weight of a pair of gazelles is 800-1200 g, the weight of the male is 900 g and the weight of the female is 800 g.
3- White King:
Origin: America. The most common American breed, and the weight of a pair of gazelles is 950 g
4- The Silver King:
Origin: America. It is slightly heavier than the white king, the weight of one chicks is 500g.
* Local strains:
1- Rumi pigeons:
The color is white, there are feathers on the legs, it has a shawl on the top of the head, and it has a tendency to fly. The Zaghloul weighs 750 g and produces four pairs of chicks annually.
2- Wild pigeons:
The product of the mixture is between many strains and varies between individuals in color and size. It is white, red and gray, and it is larger in size (500-600) gm and gives 6-8 pairs annually.
3- Maltese pigeons:
It is one of the large species and its individuals have many colors, the legs are featherless and there is no confusion on the head, the weight of the gazelle is (400-500 g), and it gives 3 pairs annually.
4- Qatawi pigeons:
It is similar to the turkey pigeon in the shape of the legs and the head, but the feathers are brick-red in color, with appendages of feathers at the back of the beak. The weight of the roe is 400 g, and its production is 3 pairs annually.
2- Hobby or ornamental pigeons:
It includes beautiful-looking species that have the ability to make movements, and they are raised for the purpose of participating in exhibitions and competitions. There are two types of hobby pigeons:
- Species raised for the purpose of flight.
- Breeding types for decoration to participate in competitions.
- Species raised for the purpose of flight:
1- Shaqlabaz pigeon:
The bird acquires any color while keeping the chest and head white. It has the ability to perform some somersaults and fly to high altitudes in the air.
2 - Red, Black and Yellow Tumbler Pigeons:
There are two types of it, one with a short face and the beak of this type is similar to the beak of the shaqlabaz pigeon, and the other with a long face. This type is bred to enjoy its wonderful view and its beak is thicker and shorter.
3 - Blue, Black, Silver, Spotted and Red Drunken Pigeons:
Its breed is small in size and has the ability to fly for several hours without interruption and has the ability to enter into competitive competitions.
Species that are bred to participate in exhibitions:
1 - Potter pigeons:
The dominant color is white and the wing is blue or black. It has the ability to inflate its body during display, and there are many types of it, including the English potter, which is long, and the dwarf potter, which is of poor parents due to its neglect of eggs.
2- Ratib pigeons:
It has peacock-like feathers that extend along the back of the neck and end in the form of a crest with a small beak.
3 - Kiosks pigeons:
She takes care of raising her young, and the bird's face takes a full round shape with a very small beak.
4 - The Cropper pigeons:
Considered the great-grandfather of the English potter, it is a tall bird and stands upright when displayed.
5 - Almudena pigeons:
It is one of the oldest types of pigeons participating in many competitions and originates from the Italian city of Modena. It is very short, the tail is short and broad, and the neck is thick and short.
6- Fantail pigeons:
It makes attractive displays and originates from India and is shaped like a small peacock as it shakes its head when walking.
